Manual Lymphatic Drainage
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?
A calm, light treatment that helps your body feel lighter, clearer and more at ease.
MLD is a specialist technique that supports your lymphatic system — the part of your body responsible for clearing waste, reducing puffiness and keeping fluid levels balanced. The touch is incredibly gentle; most people are surprised by how soothing it feels. Many drift into sleep as their body unwinds.
It’s perfect if you struggle with bloating, puffiness, fluid retention, low energy, or if you simply want a calming treatment that helps your body reset.
What is the Lymphatic System and why would it need support?
MLD is ideal if you experience:
- Bloating or abdominal heaviness
- Puffiness, Oedma or water retention
- Low energy or sluggishness
- Stress, overwhelm or nervous system fatigue
- Post‑illness recovery or general immune support
- You just want a light, calming treatment
It’s also gentle enough for pregnancy, chronic illness and oncology clients, including those going through chemotherapy or radiotherapy. MLD offers a calm, supportive space for the body to rebalance. Please note that this is a wellbeing treatment, not a medical procedure.
To help you understand how MLD supports your body, here’s a simple overview of your lymphatic system — your built‑in waste‑clearing and fluid‑balancing network.
It runs throughout your whole body, carrying lymph fluid that helps remove waste, reduce puffiness and support your immune system. Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system doesn’t have a pump. It relies on natural movement, breathing and gentle stimulation to keep things flowing.
Your lymphatic system includes:
Lymph vessels — tiny, delicate tubes just under the surface of your skin.
Lymph nodes — small filtering stations found in areas like the neck, underarms, abdomen and groin.
Lymph fluid — carrying waste, excess fluid and immune cells.
When this system flows well, you often feel lighter, clearer and more balanced in your body.
Why Your Lymphatic System Can Become Sluggish
Your lymphatic system works quietly in the background, helping to clear waste, reduce puffiness and keep fluid levels balanced. But because it relies on natural movement, breathing and gentle stimulation — rather than a pump — it can slow down when life gets heavy or your body is under strain.
It’s common for lymph flow to become sluggish when you’re experiencing:
Stress or emotional overwhelm
Low movement or long periods of sitting
Recovery from illness
Dehydration
Hormonal changes
Fatigue or nervous system exhaustion
When this happens, you might notice bloating, puffiness, heaviness or a general sense of being “slowed down.” This is where MLD can offer gentle support — helping your lymph move more freely so your body feels lighter, clearer and more comfortable again.
How does MLD work?
MLD uses slow, rhythmic, feather‑light movements that gently encourage your lymph vessels to open and move fluid more effectively. Because these vessels sit so close to the surface of your skin, deep pressure can actually switch them off — which is why MLD feels so light, soothing and calming.
During the treatment:
Fluid is guided away from areas that feel swollen or heavy
It moves towards the nearest lymph nodes
The nodes filter and clear the waste
Your body naturally rebalances fluid levels
The technique is gentle, grounding and deeply relaxing. Many people drift into sleep as their nervous system unwinds and their body begins to feel lighter, clearer and more comfortable.
What You’ll Feel During and After MLD
MLD is deeply calming. The movements are slow, rhythmic and feather‑light, helping your nervous system settle while your lymph begins to move more freely. Most people feel their body soften within minutes — shoulders drop, breathing deepens, and a sense of quiet ease spreads through the body.
After your treatment, you may notice:
A lighter, clearer feeling in your body
Reduced puffiness or heaviness
A softer abdomen and easier digestion
Improved energy or a gentle sense of clarity
Deep relaxation that lasts long after you leave
Some people drift into sleep during their session; others describe feeling “reset” or “unburdened” afterwards. The effects are subtle, natural and supportive.
